According to the Minnesota Department of Health, approximately 1.5 million Minnesotans have pre-diabetes, but only one in four are aware of it. This means that a significant number of people are at risk of developing diabetes without even realizing it. However, being diagnosed with pre-diabetes can be a positive step towards preventing the onset of full-blown diabetes.

To better understand this issue, we spoke with KSTP health expert Dr. Archelle Georgiou about the importance of early detection and management of pre-diabetes in reducing the likelihood of progression to diabetes. Dr. Georgiou emphasized the need for greater awareness and empowerment for individuals to take control of their health in order to reduce the overall prevalence of diabetes in Minnesota.

In summary, while there is a significant number of Minnesotans who have pre-diabetes and may not be aware of it, being diagnosed with this condition provides an opportunity for individuals to take proactive steps towards preventing the onset of full-blown diabetes. By raising awareness and empowering individuals to manage their health, we can work towards reducing the overall prevalence of diabetes in Minnesota.
