Eclipse tourism projected to generate more than $1 billion for Texas’ economy

In less than two weeks, Texas will be preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime event: the total solar eclipse. This event is expected to attract more than a million people to the state and infuse over $1 billion into the local economy.

The city of Red Oak is no exception to this excitement. The eclipse will cast darkness over the city for approximately 4 minutes and 13 seconds on April 8th. Local businesses are already gearing up for the influx of guests and making preparations for the unique occasion.

Philip Hughes, co-owner of Gravy restaurant in Red Oak, is strategizing how to ensure his business is ready for the eclipse event. He plans to adjust their menu and bring in additional help, including high school students, to accommodate the expected overflow of customers. The economic impact of the eclipse is estimated at nearly $1.4 billion for the entire state of Texas, with more than $13 million expected in Ellis County, where Red Oak is located.

Clint Woodward, President and CEO of the Red Oak Area Chamber of Commerce, anticipates a significant increase in revenue for the community during the eclipse event. He advises local businesses to ramp up staffing, increase inventory, and encourage residents to stock up on essentials ahead of time. The eclipse is expected to be a multi-day event starting as early as Friday and continuing through the following weekend.

Woodward stresses that businesses need to be prepared for an influx of visitors and capitalize on this opportunity as an opportunity to attract new customers. At Gravy, Hughes and his sister Michelle Bezanilla are focused on making sure that their guests enjoy their experience during this unique occasion while introducing themselves as potential future customers.

Overall, it’s clear that Texas is preparing for a major boost in tourism due to this solar eclipse event
