A Student’s Guide to Using Artificial Intelligence Responsibly and Effectively

The 2024 school year in Peru began with over 6 million students returning to classrooms, marking the start of academic activities. With the rise of artificial intelligence, some students are turning to technology to complete their tasks. However, it is important to understand the correct use of AI tools.

In an effort to help students navigate the world of AI, Trade interviewed Liliana Muñoz Guevara, director of the Comprehensive Basic Training Unit at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, and Omar Florez, an AI scientist. Together they created a guide on how to use AI tools appropriately in education.

Muñoz advises students to not be afraid to try new tools and to use them wisely. She explains that AI can facilitate personalized learning and deeper exploration of complex topics.

There are many different AI tools available for students today, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Wolfram Alpha. Perplexity is connected to the internet and provides up-to-date information on a wide range of topics. Wolfram Alpha is an online tool for solving mathematical queries.

When using AI chatbots, it’s important to verify the original source of data in order to ensure accuracy. While AI can enhance academic performance in many areas, it may be limited in disciplines that require practical skills. However, it can be a valuable tool in creative fields such as music and dance through generative AI tools.

It’s essential for educators and students alike to consider ethical aspects when using AI in education. While technology can enhance learning experiences, it’s important not to lose sight of the human aspect of learning such as peer interaction and teacher guidance.
