KNUJ Announces 2023-2024 Winter Athletes of the Year: Rhyan Holmgren, Nick Slater, Colton Benson and Five State Tournament Teams Honored

KNUJ Hosts 62nd Annual Player of the Year Event featured in News, Sports, and Jobs

At the 62nd Annual Player of the Year Event, KNUJ announced their 2023-2024 Winter Athletes of the Year. From a pool of 44 nominees, three athletes were chosen to receive this prestigious recognition.

Firstly, St. Peter’s Rhyan Holmgren was named the KNUJ Girls Basketball Player of the Year for her exceptional performance in both the Class AAA State Tournament and throughout the season. Holmgren averaged an impressive 21.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game during her time on the court.

Secondly, Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Area’s Nick Slater was awarded Wrestler of the Year for his outstanding contributions to LCWMA’s success in both team and individual state tournaments at 189 pounds. Slater finished the season with an impressive record of 47-6 and will go on to compete at college level wrestling tournaments next year.

Finally, Colton Benson from New Ulm received his second consecutive KNUJ Boys Basketball Player of the Year honor for his impressive stats throughout the season, including 27.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Benson ended his high school career as one of New Ulm’s top scorers with a total of 2,207 points.

During this event, KNUJ also recognized five state tournament teams: New Ulm boys hockey team, LCWMA wrestling team, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart girls basketball team, St
