Global Effort to Mitigate AI Risks: US Leads International Community in Regulating AI Development

United Nations makes decision to combat risks of artificial intelligence

In a major development, the US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced that all 193 members of the UN General Assembly have unanimously agreed to take control of artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent it from controlling human society. This decision is part of a global effort to monitor the development of AI technologies and mitigate potential risks such as disruptions to democratic processes, fraud, and job losses.

The US has been at the forefront of efforts to regulate AI, with lawmakers urging action from the Biden administration. However, progress has been slow due to political polarization. In an effort to reduce risks associated with AI, the White House issued a new executive order in October aimed at protecting consumers, workers, and minorities while enhancing national security. The decision provides a set of principles to guide the development and use of AI in the future.

While negotiations faced opposition from countries like Russia and China, who are exploring the use of AI for various purposes, the international community is working towards creating a framework for responsible development and deployment of AI technologies. Europe has taken the lead in regulating AI, with EU lawmakers adopting a temporary agreement this month.

The US is not alone in its efforts to protect against potential risks associated with AI. The UK has also been actively involved in discussions on this issue. Last November, an international agreement on protecting AI from counterfeiting was unveiled by several countries including the US and UK. Despite objections from some countries like Russia and China who are exploring different uses for AI technology, progress is being made towards developing a framework for responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence technologies worldwide.
