Tehran was visited by the leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad

On March 26, Ismail Haniyya, the head of the Politburo of Hamas, and Ziyad al-Nahala, the Secretary General of Islamic Jihad, visited Tehran. During their visit, they met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and were also received by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ismail Haniyya was born on January 29, 1963 in Shaati Palestinian refugee camp in Gaza. He graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza in Arabic literature in 1987 and joined the ranks of the new Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS). After being deported to South Lebanon in 1992 by Israeli authorities, he returned to Gaza a year later and began working at the Islamic University. In 2004, Haniyya became the head of the Hamas government in Gaza following the assassinations of Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and Abd al-Aziz Rantisi. He was elected as the new head of Hamas politburo in 2017 and his tenure was extended in August 2021.

Ziyad al-Nahala was born in Khan Yunis, in south Gaza Strip, in 1953. He has a history as a militant involved in terrorist actions after being released from prison
